Rising Above Chaos: Finding Calm in Uncertain Times
As we enter this new year, the world feels heavier. Fear, division, and uncertainty cast long shadows over our collective and personal futures, touching every corner of our lives.
It is not surprising that many of us feel overwhelmed and unsure of how to navigate what lies ahead. But there is hope. There are ways for us to become grounded, maintain clarity, and even thrive amid the chaos.
Staying Grounded
Staying grounded keeps us connected to the present moment, enabling us to recognize subtle signs and synchronicities that can guide our path.
When we are grounded, we can distinguish between random events and those that are meaningful or serve as guidance from the universe. Grounding practices such as meditation, mindful breathing, or spending time in nature help us cultivate this inner balance."
These practices help us tune into the flow of life and receive its messages.
Tips for Staying Grounded
Mindful Breathing: Take a few minutes to focus on your breath, noticing the rise and fall of your chest. This simple practice can help quiet your mind and bring you into the present.
Nature Walks: Spend time in nature, paying attention to the sights, sounds, and textures around you. Let yourself become fully immersed in the natural world to recharge your sense of well-being.
Synchronicity Journaling: As you practice grounding, you will find it easier to notice synchronicities—those meaningful coincidences that seem too aligned to be random. Start a journaling practice to record these experiences. Doing so will help you track patterns, reflect on their meanings, and recognize when the universe is trying to communicate with you.

Recognizing Signs and Synchronicities
Once we have achieved a grounded state, we begin to notice more synchronicities—those meaningful coincidences that can feel like signs from the universe.
These signs may appear as repeated numbers, unexpected encounters, or events that align perfectly with our intentions or questions. Recognizing them can clarify and confirm that we are on the right path.
In my book Winks from Above, I emphasize how these synchronicities are not random but rather 'Winks' from the universe, reminding us that we are never truly alone.
We can refer to our Synchronicity Journal to deepen our connection to synchronicity. Reviewing past entries may reveal recurring themes or patterns in our lives. We may notice that certain symbols or messages appear when we need them most. We can uncover their deeper truths by keeping an open mind and heart as we reflect on these signs. These ‘Winks’ affirm that the universe constantly collaborates with us, offering subtle yet profound guidance.
Acknowledging and Limiting Negativity
Acknowledging how negativity affects us is a crucial step toward regaining balance. While it is natural to feel overwhelmed by sad news or negative conversations, we must remember that we have a choice in how much we engage with them. We are not obligated to remain plugged into every stream of distressing news.
Limiting our exposure to negative influences creates space for positive energy, creativity, and spiritual growth. Curating our social media and news feeds to minimize negativity and include inspiring, uplifting accounts can free mental space for personal growth, nurturing relationships, and deepening our connection to spirit.
Facing the Storm with Calm
Chaos can pull us into its whirlwind, but we can face it without being swept away. Focusing on what we can control, however small it may seem, helps us remain steady. For example, decluttering our physical space—a tidy environment promotes a calm mind—can be a good place to start.
When conversations turn divisive, we can strive to listen more than we speak. Even when not reciprocated, empathy is a strength that soothes tensions and fosters understanding. Remember, everyone is navigating their inner storm.
Finding Solace in Activities and Relationships
Solace often emerges through creativity and connection in challenging times. Engaging in activities that bring us joy, such as painting, gardening, writing, cooking, or other pursuits, reminds us of the enduring beauty in the world, even during challenging moments.
In today’s polarized climate, our relationships can be profound sources of comfort. Nurturing connections that uplift us and approaching strained relationships with patience and compassion can help strengthen our bonds. Being present for someone—without judgment or the urge to fix their problems—can be transformative. Unfortunately, some relationships may become toxic due to another person’s ongoing behavior. In such cases, disengaging may be the healthiest choice.
Navigating Division and Injustice
One of the most disheartening aspects of today’s world is the widening gap between those with resources and those without, compounded by rising hatred and incivility.
These challenges may feel insurmountable, but even small, meaningful steps on our part can make a difference. Volunteering, donating, or simply being a voice for fairness and kindness in our community ensures that every positive act contributes to a more significant wave of change, no matter how small.
Keeping Our Sanity in the Midst of Chaos
Adversity is a teacher. While the lessons may be difficult, they also offer opportunities for growth and resilience. When we look back on challenging times, the ways we rose above the chaos often stand out most.
Seeking out communities that share our values and encourage growth and healing can provide us with much-needed support. It is also vital to protect our energy by saying “no” to activities and commitments that drain us.
A Call to Hope
This year will undoubtedly test us but also offer countless opportunities to prove our strength, compassion, and humanity. Let us approach it with calm, courage, and an unwavering commitment to rise above the chaos. Together, we can create a world that, though imperfect, is brimming with potential for meaningful connection, positive growth, and spiritual healing.
